How much does absence cost?

Absence Management 3

It is estimated that overall between 12% and 18% of payroll costs go on absence. Absenteeism also reduces productivity of other staff and can damage your brand.

This figure (rather than the 5% of time lost mentioned in the section heading) includes the extra money needed to provide overstaffing levels to cover absences, the time taken to administer absence, decreased productivity, and missed deadlines and the penalties associated with these.

Indirectly, absenteeism damages the morale of other staff, as well as damaging the reputation of the organisation, meaning potentially less business in future.

You can see how damaging absenteeism is.
